Towpath Reopened in Upper Black Eddy (Near Mile Post 44)

Towpath Reopened in Upper Black Eddy (Near Mile Post 44)

March 22, 2020

Update: The towpath has been reopened in this area.

March 9, 2022

TOWPATH CLOSURE – UPPER BLACK EDDY (Near Mile Post 44). South of Mile Post 44 and north of the RTE 32 Bridge near Trails End Lane in Upper Black Eddy the towpath is temporarily CLOSED. The purpose of this closure is for PUBLIC SAFETY and will be in effect until the towpath can be made safe. Trail users should turn around at the closure and NOT attempt to get by it. Large equipment is being used in the area by MetEd utility company to replace a utility pole and infrastructure damaged by recent high winds, as well as remediate the effects of incident on the canal and towpath. The Towpath is impassible from HIGH FALLS CREEK to the ROUTE 32 BRIDGE.

Delaware Canal Towpath Closed Between Berm Lane Bridge and Lodi Hill Road

Delaware Canal Towpath Closed Between Berm Lane Bridge and Lodi Hill Road

Starting 8/13 – TOWPATH CLOSURE (MILES 42.70 – 41.84).

In the area of Upper Black Eddy the towpath is CLOSED between Berm Lane Bridge and Lodi Hill Road. The purpose of this closure is for PUBLIC SAFETY and will be in effect until the Spahr’s Camelback Bridge has been deconstructed and no longer spanning the towpath and canal.  This bridge is one of six remaining authentic camelback bridges that can be found along the entire 58.9 mile length of the Canal and they are an iconic structure to the two-hundred year old National Historic Landmark. The purpose of this deconstruction is to prepare the site for future bridge abutment repairs and the eventual rehabilitation of the superstructure. Trail users should turn around at the closure and NOT attempt to get by it, as heavy equipment will be blocking the towpath and for other safety concerns. Delaware Canal State Park anticipates this closure to be intermittent in nature over the next 60 days; however, this is a tentative timeline subject to being lessened or extended.

Rewatering Progress

Rewatering Progress

May 25, 2021

Last week the Delaware Canal State Park staff opened the bypass gate at Easton to create a maintenance level of water in the northern end of the Canal.  There is currently water as far south as Lodi Hill Road at the Tinicum Township/Upper Black Eddy line.   Tomorrow the Park staff plans to allow the water to start flowing southward to the waste gate at the Golden Pheasant Inn.   The water will be released at this location until the Tinicum Aqueduct lining is repaired and several sinkholes are filled.

Rewatering Update from the Park Manager

Rewatering Update from the Park Manager

August 31, 2020

“As of today, water will start progressing into the Bridgeton Township area as the Indian Rock Wastegate at mile post 45.83 was just closed this morning. The public can anticipate seeing water flow down the next 4 miles to the Lodi Wastegate at mile post 41.75 over the next three days. We will fine tune the water volume from that point and then move on the next wastegates at mile post 40.00 and 39.39. The goal will be to provide the greatest volume without the potential to disturb the construction at the Tinicum Aqueduct. The culmination will be a very small flow of water as far as Golden Pheasant Wastegate at mile post 37.36. I predict we will be at that point by sometime around Wednesday or Thursday of next week if everything goes according to plan.

In speaking with the Tinicum Aqueduct construction manager from Clearwater Construction Inc. they are hopeful to have the majority of the project concluded by the end of September. My hope is that we will see water crossing the aqueduct within the first week of October. I understand people are eager to see the water flow and rightfully so, after being de-watered since September of 2019. With these large infrastructure improvements being completed we will be one step closer to a more continuous water supply into the future.”
