Faces and Places 2021
An Old Home, A New Home
Please join the Friends as we discover the many facets of the historic Buckstone Farm property and celebrate its preservation and possibilities as the newest part of the Delaware Canal State Park Complex.
This year’s Faces & Places activities and festivities will revolve around Buckstone Farm, which lies on land that William Penn selected for his personal use as “The Manor of the Highlands.”
While touring the expansive Farm, you will:
- Hear the who’s who of owners since Penn, including the Taylors of Taylorsville, a Dupont relative, and the illustrious Feinstone family.Tour the mid-19th century mansion fondly known as “The Big House,” which has not been open to visitors until now.
- Learn how the David Library of the American Revolution came to be and see the facilities where scholars from around the world came to use the best collection of Revolutionary War era documents outside of England.
- Enjoy a showing of “Paradise Ditch,” a 1950’s era film about the Delaware Canal. It has footage taken while the Canal was still in commercial operation spiced with vintage ladies in their shirtwaist dresses lounging along the Canal and naughty boys skinny dipping.
- Hear how the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources acquired the 143-acre property in October of 2020 ensuring that the open land will always remain so. Toast the inspiring acquisition with DCNR officials and find out how their use plans are evolving.
As the sun fades, we’ll gather on the porch and in the front lawn of “The Big House” for libations and elegant hors d’oeuvres. The view of the Canal and the fields that run to the Delaware River is lovely. Anticipate a surprise or two.
