Towpath to be Closed in Vicinity of Scudder Falls Bridge Project

Towpath to be Closed in Vicinity of Scudder Falls Bridge Project

December 13, 2017

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission has announced that the Delaware Canal towpath in the vicinity of the Scudder Falls Bridge project in Lower Makefield Township will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following dates:

Friday, December 15

Monday, December 18 through Friday, December 22

Tuesday, December 26 through Friday, December 29

The scheduled closures are needed for work associated with the widening of the current approach bridge structure that carries I-95 across the Delaware Canal and its towpath. The work will involvd both staged demolition and construction activities.

The closure periods are subject to change due to weather and other considerations.   Pedestrians and bicyclists are urged to exercise caution when traveling along the Canal near or through work areas for the duration of the 4-1/2-year-long bridge replacement project.

36-HOUR-LONG CLOSURE OF PENNSYLVANIA CANAL TOWPATH

NEAR SCUDDER FALLS BRIDGE NEXT WEEK

LOWER MAKEFIELD, PA – Pennsylvania’s Delaware Canal towpath is scheduled to be closed for 36 hours next week in the area where it crosses beneath I-95 near the Scudder Falls Bridge, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.

The towpath closure is scheduled to begin about 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 11, and end approximately 6 p.m. Thursday, October 12.

The closure is needed to allow for tree cutting that will allow for eventual widening of the bridge that carries I-95 across the canal on the Pennsylvania approach to the Scudder Falls Bridge.  The highway widening is one element of the multi-faceted Scudder Falls Bridge Replacement Project that is currently underway and is expected to continue until late 2021.

Bicyclists, pedestrians and other recreationists are urged to plan other routes or excursions during the towpath closure period.  (Note: A portion of the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath on the New Jersey side of the Scudder Falls Bridge also will be closed to the public on October 11 and 12.)

More information and videos on the bridge replacement project are available at www.scudderfallsbridge.com.

Towpath Closed at the Tinicum Aqueduct

Towpath Closed at the Tinicum Aqueduct

June 7, 2017

From the Delaware Canal State Park Manager:

Due to the canal failure at the Tinicum Aqueduct, a portion of the towpath will be closed until emergency repairs and stabilization work can be completed.  After further inspection by engineering staff it was determined that a trail closure would be necessary for public safety.  The towpath will be closed until further notice from the parking lot south of the Golden Pheasant (across from Marshal Island) to the south side of the Tinicum Aqueduct.  The trail closure can be bypassed by using River Road for a short distance (approximately ½ mile) or by crossing over the Frenchtown bridge or Lumberville pedestrian bridge and using the trail along the D&R Canal State Park in New Jersey.

This photo shows the blowout. The towpath is intact but is next to the blowout.

**TRAIL CLOSURE** A portion of the towpath will be closed due to construction surrounding a bridge replacement project at Lower Limeport Bridge. The closed portion is in Solebury Township between Upper Limeport Bridge and Phillips Mill Bridge, approximately 0.25 miles north of Phillips Mill. Please heed the barricades and avoid this area, or find alternate routes. Do not trespass on private property to bypass this area. For bicyclists, this section can easily be bypassed by following River Road (Route 32) for a short distance by exiting and/or entering the towpath at Upper Limeport Bridge and Canal Park in Solebury Township. Please DO NOT enter the construction zone AT ANY TIME, regardless of whether it is active or not, for your safety and that of the workers and equipment. Park officials expect the tow path to re-open by the end of April 2017.

If you have any questions or need additional information about the trail closure please feel free to contact the park office.
