Rediscovering the Towpath: The Legacy of William Francis Taylor

Preview Opening Reception

Rediscovering the Towpath: The Legacy of William Francis Taylor

145 South Main Street, New Hope, PA 18938

Ticket price: $100.00 per person

**Attendance is limited to 50 guests

Something new is brewing at Lock 11 in New Hope!  A new exhibition commemorating the works of William Francis Taylor will open the end of March 2023.  Located in the old concession building next to the Locktender’s House, the exhibit will provide a chronology of the life and times of Taylor and his contribution to preserving the Delaware Canal and Towpath for generations to come.

The Friends of the Delaware Canal are hosting an exclusive preview of the exhibit on March 26th, with a reception following, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, to celebrate Taylor’s 140th birthday.

Be the first audience to tour the exhibit and, following your tour, join the Friends for a reception at the private home of Michele Becci and James Freeo, the Lock 10 Locktender’s House.  Additional items from private collections of Taylor’s works that are not available to the general public will be on display at the home.  The reception will include scrumptious light bites, wine, prosecco, and of course, birthday cake!  The home was built by Lewis Coryell in the 1700s and was the home of the locktender during the Delaware Canal’s operation.  Come and see this amazing property and learn about its history, while having the opportunity to view the private collectors’ works for one night only.

Who was William Francis Taylor?

Before the Friends of the Delaware Canal came into being, there was the Delaware Valley Protective Association, and William Francis Taylor was its first president.  Formed in 1933, the DVPA encouraged the state to restore and maintain the Canal.  Later, the organization was also responsible for securing an essential historic national landmark designation, protecting the Canal and towpath for generations to come. Taylor also served as editor of the local magazine, Towpath, which was published from 1939 to 1941.

We hope you will join us on March 26th for the exclusive preview opening of the William F. Taylor exhibit. The preview will be limited to 50 attendees, so be sure to get your tickets so you don’t miss out.

If you are unable to join us on this date, please consider donating to support the Friends and the work we do to preserve improve and promote the Delaware Canal.
